What is ERP?
Article ID: #1057

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) originated from MRP (Material Requirements Planning and later Manufacturing Resource Planning), which primarily focused on the manufacturing and financials of an organization. As technology evolved, the term “ERP” was first introduced by Gartner, a research and analysis firm, in 1990.

ERP is an information system designed to encompass and integrate all departments, resources, and business processes within an organization. It seeks to connect the stand-alone computer systems within each department into a single, unified system so all employees will be on the same page at all times. In other words, employees in sales, accounting, marketing, purchasing, order fulfillment, inventory, customer service, employee management, or productions will all be using the same software program within a single system. This unified system should streamline the entire business operation so that all employees from different departments can easily share information and work as a whole. When properly implemented, companies will enjoy tremendous payback from its ERP system.
